Cat Ear Canal Surgery in Lincolnshire | Scrounger’s Case Study

Scrounger’s Family’s Lucky Find – A Lincolnshire Rescue Cat Ear Surgery Story

Scrounger is a handsome tabby cat, a bit of a loner but doesn’t mind cuddles if absolutely necessary.

He lives his life adventurously, embracing the outdoors and open spaces (a bit like his surgeon!). Unfortunately, Scrounger’s life took an unexpected downturn. He was left behind during a house move, and when the new owners moved into the house, they realised that Scrounger and his sister were still resident, and keen to stay living there too!

The new family quickly became attached to both cats (and no wonder, we believe a house can’t be a home without a cat or dog).

Cat Ear Problems: First Signs of Trouble

While his sister seemed in good health, Scrounger was suffering with an ear infection and seemed rather uncomfortable.

The family treated him as best as they could while building that important relationship based on trust and care. It was a delicate time, since he had been left behind and now needed to feel welcomed and cared for by a new family.

Luckily, they bonded well, and this allowed the family to bring Scrounger into the practice here in Sutton Bridge.

Diagnosis of Ear Polyps in Cats

Scrounger was examined by Luciano, who diagnosed him with an ear infection. But… that wasn’t all. Luciano suspected that Scrounger might also have ear polyps, which would explain the discomfort.

Polyps are generally benign growths arising from the lining of the ear canal or middle ear. They can grow large or in numerous numbers, causing pressure within the canal, you can imagine how uncomfortable that must feel!

Surgeries of this kind may need to be considered, some of which can be expensive due to the complexity of the area and the technical difficulties involved. Luciano knew this and faced the dilemma of breaking the news to the family. However, he decided to introduce the subject early, preparing them for every possible scenario and giving Scrounger the best options moving forward.

Initial Cat Ear Infection Treatment

Scrounger was sent home on a course of ear cleaner and topical medicated drops to treat the ear infection.

At the follow-up appointment, the infection had cleared, and the owners had done an excellent job with the cleaning, so much so that his ear canal was now clearly visible, and the polyps more obvious.

TECA/BO Ear Canal Surgery for Cats in Lincolnshire

The only meaningful option was a surgery known as TECA/BO – Total Ear Canal Ablation and Bulla Osteotomy.

In simple terms (but not a simple surgery), the ear canal is completely removed down to the eardrum. The middle ear is widened by cutting a piece of bone, then cleaned of diseased lining. The ear is closed shut and hearing is muffled, like having your head under water.

This operation is very complex and can carry some significant complications (details beyond the scope of this story).

Why TECA/BO Surgery Is Sometimes Needed

Scrounger’s family were faced with this decision. Let’s remember, he wasn’t originally their cat, but now he was part of their family, and they loved him dearly.

Despite the conundrum, they had no hesitation in booking him for the surgery, knowing it was the best option for Scrounger. They desperately wanted him to return to his happy outdoorsy life as soon as possible.

Scrounger’s Surgery Recovery

Scrounger’s wound healed within two weeks, but his eye was still not blinking correctly, a common complication. This was managed with general eye drops and, six weeks after the operation, he was back to normal.

His family and the handsome boy himself, were relieved to know the outdoors could once again be his playground.

We wish Scrounger all the best and are very grateful that this family went above and beyond to care for him. Love really does have a way of showing up.
